An OS is a collection of programs that starts up as soon as the computer is switched on, it controls what the OS does and without it the computer won’t be able to function and the user won’t be able to use it

A

Operating Systems are now being designed for mobile devices as well as computers. They are designed for low-powered devices which accept input via a touch screen. Apple’s iOS, Windows Mobile and Google Android are three of the most popular OS’s for mobiles.

Name 3 main function of the OS and their uses

A

Error reporting —
—Letting the user know that something is wrong, for example the printer running out
of ink or paper.

File management —
—Creating, deleting, renaming and organisation of files. Save As, Save a copy As, dragging
file to the trash.

Human computer interface (HCI) —
—The way in which the user communicates with the computer is called the HCI.
Involves the mouse, icons and pull down menus on the user’s desktop area.
