Chapter 6 - Cell Division Flashcards
1
Q
What cells use mitosis to divide?
A
Normal body (somatic) cells (not a sex cell
2
Q
What cells use meiosis to divide?
A
Sex cell formations (gametes)
3
Q
What is a diploid cell?
A
When it makes a complete copy of both cells
4
Q
What is a haploid cell?
A
When it makes half of each cell
5
Q
What uses mitosis?
A
- Mammals use it to grow
2. Bacteria use it to asexually reproduce (binary fission)
6
Q
What uses meiosis?
A
- The production of sex cells (gametes)
- Sex cells are haploid (have half the chromosome number)
- Sex cells display variation (because of ‘crossing-over’)
7
Q
Examples of sex cells?
A
Animals: egg and sperm
Plants: ovule and pollen
8
Q
Properties of mitosis?
A
- Somatic cells
- Mitotically dividing within cells body
- Used by organisms which reproduce asexually e.g. bacteria (binary fission)
- Used by mammals to grow
9
Q
Properties of meiosis?
A
- Gametes are sex cells
- Half amount of chromosomes (haploid)
- Humans are diploid
- Sex cells display variation (crossing-over)
