Chapter 2 - Organs Flashcards
What is digestion?
When large food molecules are physically and chemically broken down into smaller molecules which can be used for energy, growth and repair
What is the order of digestion?
Mouth –> Oesophagus –> Stomach –> Small Intestine –> Large Intestine –> Rectum
What happens in the mouth?
Physically broken down with teeth and tongue
What happens in the oesophagus?
Squeezed down to the stomach
What happens in the stomach?
Physically churned and chemically broken down by hydrochloric acid and enzymes
What happens in the small intestine?
Absorbed into the bloodstream
What happens in the large intestine?
Water is absorbed into the bloodstream
What is starch broken down by? Into what?
Amylase into glucose
What is protein broken down by? Into what?
Protease into amino acids
What is fat broken down by? Into what?
Lipase into fatty acids and glycerol
How is the small intestine adapted?
It has a very large surface area with villi for increased absorption
What does xylem do?
Transports water (transpiration)
What does phloem do?
Transports sugar (translocation)
Properties of xylem?
- Transports minerals
- 1 directional transport
- Dead/hollow cells
Properties of phloem?
- 2 directional transport
- Living cells
- Contains sieve plates
