Q

what is the process/stages of memory?

A

encoding, storage and retrieval

encoding is the conversion of information into a usable form so that it can be neurologically represented and stored in memory

storage: is the retention of encoded information over time

retrieval is the recovery of stored information and bringing it into conscious awareness for use

Q

what is sensory memory?

A

sensory memory is the entry point of memory in which incoming sensori stimuli are retained in their original sensory form for a very brief time;

Q

what is long term memory?

A

long-term memory is a memory store that holds a potentially unlimited amount of information for a very long time, possibly permanently

Q

what is short term memory?

A

short-term memory is a memory system with limited storage capacity in which information is stored for a relatively short time unless renewed in some way; also functions as ‘working memory’

Q

what is an implicit memory?

A

a memory that requires a conscious effort (declarative semantic episodic )

Q

what is an explicit memory?

A

is a memory that forms unconsciously ( the procedural cerebellum encodes this)

Q

draw Atkinson-Shiffrin model of memory

A

Atkinson–Shiffrin multi-store model of memory represents memory as consisting of three separate stores called sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory

Q

how is the cerebral cortex involved with long term memory?

A

the cerebral cortex has a crucial role in the process for explicit memories it processes short term memory . links memories to others and stores memories

Q

how is the hippocampus associated with long term memory?

A

take note of:

  • does not store memories but transfers them to the cerebral cortex
  • plays a role in the formation of emotional memories particularly explicit memories.

need to know in summary:
it encodes explicit decleratice memories it also consoildates STM to LTM

Q

how is the amygdala associated with long term memory

A

the amygdala retrieves explixit declarative memories and is emotionally driven where it creates emotional memories

Q

how is the cerebellum associated with long term memory?

A

the cerebellum encodes impicit procedural memories as it is involved in the motor control coordination and balance

Q

what is relearning?

A

relearning learning information again that has been previously learned and therefore stored in long-term memory; also called savings

Q

what is reconstruction?

A

reconstruction in relation to memory, combining stored information with other available information to form what is believed to be a more coherent, complete or accurate memory; (also called reconstructive memory)

16
Q

what is anterograde amnesia?

A

anterograde amnesia loss of memory only for information or events occurring after the trauma that caused the amnesia

simplified it is the inability to retrieve previously stored memories

17
Q

what is retrograde amnesia?

A

cannot code memories and make new ones where it occurs due to damage to the hippocampus and is less likely to recover.

18
Q

what is Alzheimer’s disease?

A

Alzheimer’s disease a type of dementia characterised by gradual widespread degeneration of brain neurons, progressively causing memory decline, deterioration of cognitive and social skills, and personality changes

19
Q

what is context dependant cues?

A

context-dependent cue a prompt for memory retrieval based on environmental factors in the specific situation in which the required memory was originally formed; compare with state-dependent cue

20
Q

what is state dependant cues?

A

state-dependent cue a prompt for memory retrieval based on an individual’s internal physiological and/or psychological state at the time the required memory was formed; compare with context-dependent cue

21
Q

what is the serial position effect?

A

serial position effect is a research finding that free recall is better for items at the end and beginning of a list than for items in the middle of the list; see also primary effect and recency effect

22
Q

what is the reconstruction of memories in relation to the fallibility of memory?

A

a

26
Q

what is a free recall?

A

ree recall reproducing information from memory in any order, without the assistance of any cue

27
Q

what is a serial recall?

A

serial recall reproducing information from memory in the order in which it was learned

28
Q

what is a cued recall?

A

cued recall reproducing information from memory by using a prompt to assist retrieval

29

what is episodic memory?

A

autobiographical events/ personal events
