Heteronomous morality
Children judge the rightness of behavior by considering consequences, punishment is inevitable (ages 4-7)
Autonomous morality
Children judge rightness of behavior by considering its intent (ages 10+)
Immanent justice
If a rule is broken, punishment will be inevitable
Gender identity
Sense of being male or female (3 years old)
Gender roles
Sets of expectations that prescribe how females or males should think, act and feel
Psychoanalytic gender theory
Preschool children develop a sexual attraction to opposite sex parent, at 5 or 6 child rejects this and begins to identify with same sex parent
Social cognitive gender theory
Gender development occurs through observation and imitation of gender behavior, rewards and punishments create experiences for gender appropriate/innappropriate behavior
Gender schema theory
Gender typing emerges as children gradually develop gender schemes or what is gender appropriate/inappropriate in their culture
Authoritarian parenting
Demanding, restrictive, psych rejection, control
Authoritative parenting
Encourages independence, but places limits and controls, acceptance and psych autonomy
Neglectful parenting
Doesn’t care about children or spend time with them, very little emotional involvement
Indulgent parenting
Very low demands, spoils children, wants to be child’s friend, nurturing warm and accepting
Corporal punishment
Physical punishment with higher levels of immediate compliance and aggression by children and Lower levels of mental health
Effects of child abuse
Adolescents who were abused engage in violent romance and risky sexual behaviors
Self-conscious emotions
Pride, shame
