Chapter 6 Flashcards
fluid
a non solid state of matter in which the atoms or molecules are free to move past each other, as in gas or liquid
pressure
the amount of force exerted per unit area of a surface
pascal
the SI unit of pressure (symbol, Pa)
atmosphere pressure
the pressure caused by the weight of the atmosphere
buoyant force
the upward force that keeps an object immersed in or floating on a liquid
Archimedes’ principle
states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the centre of mass of the displaced fluid
Bernoulli’s principle
the principle that states that the pressure in a fluid decreases as the fluid’s velocity increases
lift
an upward force on an object that moves in a fluid
thrust
the pushing or pulling force exerted by the engine of an aircraft or rocket
drag
pull (someone or something) along forcefully, roughly, or with difficulty ; the action of pulling something forcefully or with difficulty
Pascal’s principle
is a principle in fluid mechanics that states that a pressure change occurring anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid such that the same change occurs everywhere
