Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is the difference between dynamic and static equilibrium ?
Dynamic - the forward and reverse reactions occur at the same rate
Static - there us no motion between reactants and products
Define entropy
Distribution of energy in a system
At equilibrium describe the rate of forward and reverse reactions , entropy and Gibbs free energy .
Forward and reverse reactions are equal
Entropy is maximum
Gibbs free energy is a minimum
What is the formula for equilibrium constant ?
Kc =[C]^c [D]^d/[A] ^a [B]^b
What does it mean when the reaction quotient Q is less than , equal to or greater than Keq? What about their respective Gibbs energy ?
Q>K- more products than reactants , G0
What are the four properties of the law of mass action ?
- Concentrations of pure solids and liquids do not appear in the reaction
- Keq is temperature dependent
- Larger Keq is farther to the right equilibrium position
- If equilibrium constant is Keq in forward direction , it’s 1/Keq in reverse
What is the difference between kinetic and thermodynamic product ?
Kinetic - higher in free energy than thermodynamic products and form at lower temperature , proceed faster
Thermodynamic - lower free energy and more stable, proceed slower
