Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is the definition of stress?
- Instantaneous load divided by the original specimen cross sectional area
- Material that is stressed first undergoes elastic or non-permanent deformation
What is the definition of strain?
- Strain is the change in length (in the direction of the force applied) divided by the original length
What is the definition of anelasticity?
- Anelastic is time dependent elasticity
- Elastic deformation will continue after the stress application, and upon load release, time is needed for complete recovery.
What is the definition of elasticity?
- Elasticity is reversible deformation
What is the definition of Plastic?
- A material that undergoes permanent deformation
What is the relationship between stress and strain and which law describes this?
Stress (σ)= strain(ε) * Young’s modulus
σ=εE
- Hookes law describes the relationship between stress and strain
