Lumber
Two classifications of lumber.
Softwood
Hardwood
A defect left by where a branch was; weakens lumber; causes splitting.
Knot
A resin that collects in small pockets; causes discoloration.
Pitch Pocket
A curve along the face, edge, or length of a board.
Warp
A warp from end to end along the face of the board.
Bow
A warp from end to end along the edge of a board.
Crook
A warp from edge to edge across the edge of a board.
Cup
A warp both along the length and across the face of a board that produces a corkscrew affect.
Twist
Presence of bark or lack of wood along the edge or corner of lumber.
Wane
Is a wood panel made of thin layers of wood called veneers; thickness between 1/4” - 1 1/4”; stronger than natural wood.
Plywood
A process of joining together using pressure, heat, and a bonding agent.
Lamination
Wood panel made of layers of thin wood shavings; thickness between 1/4” - 3/4”.
Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
Also called hard board; is a dense panel product constructed from wood fibers joined together using heat and pressure; often used for cabinet backs and drawer bottoms.
Pressboard
