what is Deviance?
A behaviour that strays from what is “normal”.
what are Overt characteristics?
actions or qualities taken as explicitly violating the cultural norm. differs from culture to culture and changes over time.
-ex. tattoos.
what are Covert characteristics?
the unstated qualities that might make a group a target for sanctions
– E.g., age, ethnic background, “race” and sex
what is conflict deviance?
is a disagreement among groups over whether or not something is deviant.
– E.g. Marijuana use
what is Social constructionism?
proposes that certain elements of social life, such as deviance, are not natural but are created by a society or culture.
what is Essentialism?
argues that there is something natural or objectively determined about these characteristics.
what is stigma?
human attribute that is seen to discredit an individual’s social identity.
what is Bodily stigma?
physical deformities
what is Moral stigma?
Blemishes of individual character
what is Tribal stigma?
stigmatization of a group or persons in a group by characteristics, stigma transmitted through group association.
what is “the other”?
An image constructed by the dominant culture to characterize subcultures, once one has been associated with Otherness, is often subject to negative sanctions or punishment, rejection,
exclusion.
what is Moral Panic?
is a campaign designed to arouse concern over an issue or group. not very serious.
what is a Moral Entrepreneur?
a person who tries to convince
others of the need to take action around a social problem that they have defined.
- someone who has something to gain from public fear around an issue.
what is racializing deviance?
Linking particular ethnic groups especially visible minorities with certain forms of deviance.
-ex. Muslims wearing a niqab are seen as deviant, their faces are covered.
what is Multiculturalism?
A set of policies and practices designed to encourage respect for
cultural differences.
