CHAPTER 6 Flashcards
Basic components of a data communication system.
- Sending- initiates instruction
- Communication channel- media on which data information travel
- Receiving - accepts transmission of data
What is communication software
-programs that help users establish connection to Internet, manage transmission of data, and provide an interface for users to communicate.
What is hub
device that provides central point for cables and in network
What is router
Connects computers and transmits data to correct destination on a network
Types of communication channel
communication channel- transmission media which are capable of carrying more signals
Physical transmission media- wire, cable, and other materials used to send communication signals
1. Twisted pair cable- used for telephone systems and network cabling
2. Coaxial cable- often used for cable television wiring
3. Fiber-optic cable- capable of carrying significantly more data at faster speeds than wire cables
4. wireless transmission data- used when inconvenient, impractical, or impossible to install cables
5. Broadcast radio- distributes radio signals over long and short distances
6. Cellular radio- form of broadcast radio used for mobile communications
7. Communication satellite- space station that receives signals from earth-based stations
8. Microwave- earth-based reflective dish used for microwave communications
Networks
- networks are collection of computers and devices connected via communication devices and transmission media such as LAN, WAN, MAN
Types of networks
LAN (local area network)- network limited in geographical area such as home or office building- LAN and WLAN (wireless)
MAN metropolitan area network- connects LANs in city or town
WAN wide area network- network that covers large geographic area
Intranet,extranet,internet
Internet- global network of computers
Extranet- allows customers or suppliers to access part of company’s intranet
Intranet- Internal network that uses internet technologies makes information accessible to employees.
Types of network structures
- client/server network- one or more computers act as server/ simple network that connects fewer than 10 computers
- Internet peer-to-peer- enables users to connect to each other’s hard disks and exchange files directly.
- BUS network- all computers and devices connect to central cable, or bus.
- RING network- cable forms closed ring, or loop, with all computers arranged along ring
- STAR network- all devices connect to a central device called hub and all data transferred from on computer to another pasees through hub.
IOT (internet of things)
- pervasive web with the purpose of connecting or exchanging data with other devices over the internet
USED BY: home. industrial, automotive, agriculture, military, medical, environmental, retail, etc
