Chapter 6 Flashcards
Three main basic requirements for an engine to run
Fuel
Air
Spark
How does an engine work ?
Fuel supply to the engine chamber
Field passes through the carburetter where it’s mixed with air before entering the ignition cylinder
Electronic, spark from the spark plugs, ignites the fuel and air mixture
Most common type of pump in firefighting
Centrifugal pump
What does primed mean
The pump had to be full of water
What causes a pump to lose its prime?
When air is introduced to the pump, it will stop pumping water
What kind of stroke are most engines?
2 strokes
What is the mix gas ratio?
50:1
What do four stroke engines mean for fuel?
Straight gas
Suction hose
This is a non-collapsing hose that allows water to be drawn from the water source into the pump head
Footvauls
Football threats onto the mail, end of the suction hose, and there’s a one-way valve to prevent water from pulling back and out. It has a screen which helps provide debris from entering the pump, end
What must the valve spring and rubber plunger do?
Work together to form a seal with a rubber washer that is properly seated in the female threads
Fuel line
The fuel line is inserted into the fuel container the black plastic cap is that it onto the spout opening of the container the gray female connecter often called Mark fitting attaches to the pump
Hose coupling wrench
The hose coupling wrench is used to tighten or loosen the intake hose couplings attached to the pump end. It also used to tighten or loosen the priming cap of the pump as well. Any 1/4 term quick connect fittings that are stuck together.
stranglers
Are used to restrict water flow in one and a half inch hose line the restriction laws for firefighters to add or remove lengths of hose
How much space conflict between the jaws of the stranglers
1/8or 3mm
