What are macrominerals?
Minerals that occur in body in decent amounts
What are microminerals/trace minerals?
Minerals present in body in very small amounts
What two minerals are in hydroxyapatite?
Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P)
What hormone maintains calcium levels?
PTH - Parathyroid hormone
When is calcitonin secreted?
When blood Ca levels are normal or during hypercalcemia
What is phyate?
Phosphorus-containing compound in cereal grain husks
What is iron bound to when being transported in the bloodstream?
Transferrin
What two things are bound to iron when stored in tissues?
Ferritin and hemosiderin
What is copper bound to in the blood?
Ceruloplasmin
Why is iodine required by the body?
It makes thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Iodine deficiency can cause what two things?
Goiter and cretinism
What mineral is part of the glucose tolerance factor?
Chromium (Cr)
