Define nutrition:
Study of food, its nutrients, and other components
What are the six categories of nutrients?
Water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins
What is energy necessary for?
Body to perform metabolic work
What is the first requirement of an animals diet?

What is GE/Gross energy?
Total chemical energy
What is digestible energy/DE?
Amount of energy available for absorption across the intestinal mucosa
What is metabolic energy/ME?
Amount of energy available to tissues of the body after losses in feces/urine have been taken from the GE of the food
In terms of survivability, what is the single most important nutrient for the body?
Water
