Chapter 5.5 Salts from insoluble bases Flashcards
What happens when an acid reacts with a base?
When an acid reacts with a base, a neutralisation reaction occurs.
What does a reaction between and acid and a base produce?
The reaction between an acid and a base produces a salt and water.
What do the sum of charges on the ions in a salt add up to?
The sum of charges on the ions in a salt add up to zero. This enables you to work out the formula of salts, knowing the charges on the ions present.
What is a pure, dry sample of the salt made in?
A pure, dry sample of the salt made in an acid - base reaction can be crystallised out of solution by evaporating off most of the water, and drying with filter papers iof necessary.
What is the general equation which describes this neutralisation reaction?
Acid + Base ===> A salt + Water
