Chapter 5.1 The reactivity series Flashcards

1
Q

What gas is given off if metals react with water or dilute acids?

A

Hydrogen gas is given off. The gas ‘pops’ with a lightened spill.

Q

Many of these metals have been oxidised (i.e., have oxygen added) by oxygen in the air to form their oxides. Give an example.

A

Iron + Oxygen ===> Iron (III) Oxide

4Fe (s) + 302(g) ===> 2Fe203(s)

Q

What happens when magnesium is left in a beaker of water for several days?

A

It takes several days to collect enough gas to test with a lighted spill. The resulting ‘pop’ shows taht the gasis hydrogen.
