What is elevated and low during PMS?
estrogen, low progesterone, hypothalamic-pituitary disorders
PMS signs/symptoms
weight gain, bloating, irritability, edema, headache, mood swings, inability to concentrate, food craving, acne
What is dysmenorrhea?
Painful menstruation-lower abdpain, cramping
Dysmenorrhea Tx
Tylenol, motrin, anaprox, knee-chest position, HEAT
What is amenorrhea?
absence of menstratuion
Medications that can cause amenorrhea?
Brimocriptine
Progesterone challenge
medroxyprogesterone acetate
Premature ovaria failure
Ovaries cease to function in women under 40 years old
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
ovaries have many fluid-filled cysts. not secreting progesterone and menses/ovulation affected
MENOrrhagia
Excessive bleeding at the time of normal menstruation
MENOrrhagia length
> 7 days, extends three days longer than normal
MENOrrhagia Tx
NSAIDs, Progestins’ or OCPS
Novasure-NovaSure
endometrial ablation is one-time, five min procedure to remove lining
METROrrhagia
vaginal bleeding at time other than menstruation
METROrrhagia Etiology
response to pituitary and ovarian hormones, or HRT
Menopause
cessation of normal menstruation(total of one year)
