CHAPTER 5.3/4 NEUROTRANSMITTERS IN LEARNING AND BEHAVIOUR Flashcards
What does the term Habituation mean and what happen with the influx/efflux of ions when this process takes place?
Habituation -Learned behaviour in which the response to a stimulus weakens with repeated presentations
Less calcium ions are influxed due to the decreased action potential resulting with less neurotransmitters being released at the presynaptic neuron
What does the term Sensitisation and what happens with the influx/efflux of ions when this process takes place?
Sensitisation -Learned behaviour in which the response to a stimulus strengthens with repeated presentations.
Serotonin reduces the efflux of Potassium , prolonging the action potential which results in more Calcium ions influx which then results in causing a greater depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane after sensitisation
What is an activating system?
Activating system - a neural pathway that coordinates brain activity through a single neurotransmitter
