Chapter 5.1 Flashcards
Cell theory
all life is cellular, and that all cells arise from preexisting cells
cell division
the process which preexisting cells generate more cells. underlies many important biological processes, like:
- the formation of gametes
- the dev. of an adult from an embryo
- the growth and repair of bodily tissues
- asexual reproduction
sexual reproduction
formation of genetically unique offspring
fertilization
the joining of gametes
zygote
single cell formed by fertilization
asexual reproproduction
the creation of a new individual by a lone parent without participation of sperm and egg
binary fission
an organism’s single cell divides, creating two genetically identical offspring
plant reproduction
reproduction asexually by sprouting
regeneration
the regeneration of lost limbs
The reason trillions of cells in the the body are genetically identical:
They all descended via cell division from a single original cell (the zygote)
