Chapter 1 Flashcards
Biology
The study of life and the natural world
Life
A series of characteristics shared by all living things
Properties of Life
- Reproduction
- Growth and Development
- Energy Use
- Order
- Cells
- Response to the environment
- Evolution
Levels of Biological Organization
Through increasingly smaller levels, starting at the largest:
Biosphere
Ecosystem Community Population Organism Organ system Organ Tissue Cell Organelle Molecule
Atom
Biosphere
all life on Earth and alll of the environments that support life
Ecosystem
all of the living organisms in one particular area and the nonliving components that affect life, such as soil, air, and sunlight
Community
All of the interacting populations of organisms occupying an ecosystem
Population
a group of interacting individuals of of one species
Organism
an individual living being
Organ System
a group of organs that work together to perform a vital body function
Organ
consists of multiple tissues that cooperate to perform a specific task
Tissue
An integrated group of similar function
Cell
the fundamental unit of life
Organelle
component of the cell that performs a specific function
Molecule
a group of atoms bonded together
Atom
the fundamental unit of matter, it is the smallest unit of an element capable of displaying the properties of that element
The Scientific Method
A process to determine the likely cause for an outcome, response, observation.
Scientific Method
- Observation
- Educated guess, phrased as testable hyptothesis
- Design an experiment to test the hypothesis
- Evaluate the results (accept/reject hypothesis)
- Form a conclusion (either continue resolving the model or redesign experiment - refine or change hypothesis
Null hypothesis
the opposite of a hypothesis that invalidates the hypothesis in favor of the null hypothesis
