Social Roles
Regulate how we interact with others and embed us in networks of support and mutual obligation.
Social roles can change (spouse, retirement).
Employment
Jobs have moved from stability to jobs that are precarious, offer less income, less benefits etc.
Unemployment = worse health
Unemployment = chronic stress
Stress proliferation
The process by which an initial stressor gives rise to other stressors. Job loss can trigger many other stressors.
Marital Status
Married people have lower rates of morbidity, lower mortality rates, less mental health problems, are less likely to smoke.
Marriage improves health outcomes more for men.
Divorce
Creates stress proliferation.
- If the marriage is providing chronic strain or a noxious environment, a single stressful life event could lead to no adverse health effects.
Work-life balance and health
The subjective feeling that one is able to manage multiple roles in society and maintain the boundaries between work and home life.
Work-to-family conflict: work life interferes with family
Family-to-work: life interferes with work responsibilites
