Chapter 5: Vocabulary Flashcards
Osmotic equilibrium
The fluid concentrations are equal on two sides of the cell membrane. (Concentration= solute amount/volume of solution)
Chemical disequilibrium
The overall concentrations of he ECF and the ICF are equal, some solutes are more concentrated in one of the two body compartments than the other.
Plasma
The liquid matrix of blood.
Found inside of the circulatory system.
Proteins and other large anions are concentrated, it cannot cross the leaky exchange epithelium of the blood vessels so, is NOT present in the interstitial fluid.
Electrical disequilibrium
The inside of cells has a slight negative charge, while the outside of cells have the matching positive charge.
Changes to this create electrical signals.
Dynamic steady state
The body being at an osmotic equilibrium and being in a chemical and electrical disequilibrium.
Maintaining this state is homeostasis.
