Chapter 5: Thermal Energy & Heat Flashcards
Fahrenheit Scale
A measure the United States mostly uses to measure temperature
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold something is compared to a reference point.
Celcius Scale
Most countries is this to measure temperature
Kelvin Scale
Many scientists use this to measure temperature
Absolute Zero
The lowest temperature possible
Heat
The transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object
Convection
A type of heat transfer that occurs only in fluids
Convection Current
A circular motion that causes wind and weather changes
Radiation
The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
Conduction
Transfers heat from one particle of matter to another within an object or between two objects
Conductor
A material that conducts heat well
Insulators
Materials that do not conduct heat well
Specific Heat
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of a material by 1 kelvin
Thermal Expansion
The expanding of matter when it is heated
