Ch.5 Thermal energy and heat Flashcards
Fahrenheit scale
To measure temperature.
Temperature
Is a measure of how hot or cold something is compared to a reference point.
Celsius scale
You can use an equation to convert between scales, but it’s simpler to estimate using thermometer.
Kelvin scale
Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are divided into degrees.
Absolute zero
Is the lowest temperature possible.
Heat
Is the transfer of thermal energy from warmer objects to cooler objects.
Convection
Is a type of heat transfer that occurs only in fluid.
Convection currents
Convection current in air cause wind and weather change.
Radiation
The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Conductor
Metal such as silver are good conductors.
Insulators
Are material that do not conduct heat well
Specific heat
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of a material by 1 kelvin
Thermal expansion
The expanding of matter when it is heated
