What is a noun?
A word used as the name of a person, place, or thing.
What is a proper noun?
Name of a particular person or place.
What is a common noun?
Name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind.
What are two types of nouns included in common nouns?
- Collective nouns
- Abstract nouns
What is a collective noun?
The name of a number (or collection) of persons or things taken together and spoken of as a whole.
What is an abstract noun?
The name of a quality, action, or state.
What are some examples of qualities?
Goodness, kindness, whiteness, darkness, hardness, brightness, etc.
What are some examples of actions?
Laughter, theft, movement, judgement, hatred.
What are some examples of states?
Childhood, boyhood, youth, slavery, sleep, sickness, death, etc.
What is another classification of nouns?
Whether the nouns are countable or uncountable.
What are countable nouns?
The names of objects and people that we can count.
What are uncountable nouns?
The names of objects and people that we cannot count and mainly denote substances and abstract things.
What is another difference between countable and uncountable nouns?
Countable nouns have plural forms (i.e. horses, cars) while uncountable nouns do not (i.e. milks, sugars).
