Chapter 5 Test Notes Flashcards
What are chemical bonds?
more than one atom bonding to be stable
Describe the octet rule and how chemical bonds satisfy it.
Oct which means 8.
In the Octet rule, you need to get 8 electrons by giving up or gaining an electron the bonds help fill up an octet.
Name the 2 main types of bonds and how chemical bonds satisfy it.
Ionic and covalent.
Ionic is formed when 1 or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. Example NaCL
Covalent- forms when electrons are shared between 2 non-metals. Example CO
Do most elements exist in their pure form in nature?
No, because compounds are needed to be combined to be in stable form.
Identify the number of atoms in chemical in a chemical formula.
Look for the capital letters
Be able to name a compound based on a chemical formula. Mono, di, tri
Mono=1
di=2
tri=3
Always -ide for covalent
Always -ide for second ionic
What are diatomic molecules?
Molecules that need to exist with a bonded pair
What makes elements unstable?
When it does not have 8 in the outermost energy level
Does a molecule have the same characteristics as the parent element?
They DO NOT have the same properties because new compounds create something new with compliments.
