Compositionality

syntactic categories
The blueprint for the internal structure of phrases.
X-bar structure
An element that helps to make more precise the meaning of the head of the phrase and that occurs immediately beneath XP (e.g.,
the in the book).
Specifier
The element around which a phrasal category is built (e.g., V, N, A, P).
Head
The element or elements for which a head is subcategorized and which provide(s) information about entities and
locations implied by the meaning of the head
(e.g., the book in bought the book).
complement
One or more words that make up a syntactic unit (e.g., the apple in the apple fell onto the floor).
