What is skin type?
A classification that describes a persons genetic skin type
What is genetic?
Related to heredity and ancestry of origin
What is the T-Zone?
The center area of the face; corresponds to the “T” shape formed by the forehead, nose, and chin.
What is palpation?
The manual manipulation of tissue by touching to make an assessment of its condition
What is Holistically ?
It is a system of evaluating the entire individual in an interdisciplinary style, recognizing that body systems work synergistically.
What is TEWL?
It is an abbreviation for transepidermal water loss; water loss caused to by evaporation on the skins surface
What is Fitzpatrick Scale?
It is a scale used to measure the skin types ability to tolerate sun exposure
What is telangiectasia?
It is visible, broken or distended capillaries less than 0.5 mm due to intrinsic or extrinsic causes
What is décolleté?
also referred to as décolletage (dek-UH-luh-taj; pertaining to a woman’s lower neck and chest
What is “tech neck”?
Rhytids that develop due to the repeated movement of looking down at a cell phone or other electronic device
What is dehydration?
Lack of water

What is hirsutism?
It is a condition pertaining to an excessive growth or cover of hair
What is hypertrichosis?
It is a condition of abnormal growth of hair, characterized by the growth of terminal hair in areas of the body that normally grow only vellus hair
What is a melasma?
It is a form of hyperpigmentation that is characterized by bilateral patches of brown pigmentation on the cheeks, jawline, forehead, and upper lip due to hormonal imbalances ,such as ,pregnancy, birth control, pills, or hormone replacement therapy
What are solar comedones?
Large open comedones, usually around the eye, due to sun exposure
What is Striae?
Dermal scars due to rapid expansion or stretching of connective tissue, leaving deep, red, pink, or purple linear marks on the skin that gradually fade to light pink or silver overtime. They often occur during growth, phases, and puberty, pregnancy, and weight gain. 
What is extrinsic?
Primarily environmental factors that contribute to aging and the appearance of aging
What is photosensitivity?
High sensitivity of the skin to UV light, usually following exposure or ingestion of certain medication’s, or chemicals that result in accelerated response of the skin to UV radiation
What is intrinsic?
Skin aging factors over which we have a little control because they are part of our genetics and familial heredity
What are contraindications ?
Factor that prohibits a treatment due to a condition; treatments could cause harmful or negative side effects to those who have specific medical or skin conditions
What is isotretinoin?
Brand name: Accutane; a controlled prescription medication derived from vitamin A that is used to treat severe acne that has not responded to other treatments
What are NSAIDs?
Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs; over-the-counter medication used to reduce inflammation, such as ibuprofen
What is a consent form?
A customary written agreement between the esthetician (salon/ spa) and the client for appliance treatment, whether routine or pre-operative
What is woods lamp?
Filtered black light that is used to illuminate skin disorders, fungi, bacterial disorders, and pigmentation
