Chapter 5 Section 1 and 2 Flashcards

1
Q

When radar mapping is not available what three radar services are you limited to?

A
  1. Separating identified aircraft targets.
  2. Vectoring aircraft to intercept a PAR final
    approach course.
  3. Providing radar service in areas that ensure no
confliction with traffic on airways, other ATC areas
of jurisdiction, restricted or prohibited areas, terrain,
    etc.

Q

What do you do if you if an aircraft fails to display their assigned beacon code, or if their transponder is inoperative or malfunctioning?

A

a. Inform an aircraft with an operable transponder that the assigned beacon code is not being displayed.
b. Inform an aircraft when its transponder appears
to be inoperative or malfunctioning.
c. ensure that subsequent control position in the facility or the next facility is notified when an aircraft transponder is malfunctioning/inoperative.

Q

What do you do if you find that an aircraft’s Mode C is not valid?

A
  1. Issue the correct altimeter setting and confirm
the pilot has accurately reported the altitude.
  2. Instruct the pilot to turn off the altitude-reporting part of his/her transponder and include the reason and notify the operations supervisor-in=charge of the aircraft call sign.

Q

What is an altitude filter and what altitudes must they, at minimum, be set to?

A

Set the upper limits no lower than
1,000 feet above the highest altitude for which the
controller is responsible. In those stratified positions,
set the lower limit to 1,000 feet or more below the
lowest altitude for which the controller is responsible.
When the position’s area of responsibility includes
down to an airport field elevation, the facility will
normally set the lower altitude filter limit to
encompass the field elevation
