Chapter 5 Retake Flashcards
Compare and contrast atomic radii and ionic radii trends of elements a cross periods and down groups on the periodic table
They both increase down groups and increase in energy levels and places the electrons farther from nucleus atomic radii and decreases across periods while ionic radii decreases until group 14
Compare and contrast electronegativity and ionization energy trends across a period and down groups on the Periodic table
They both increase across a period due to more protons in the nucleus and more electrons in the outer shell. They both decrease also down groups as the electrons fill more energy levels and farther from the nucleus attraction.
In general how do protons and electrons control the characteristics and trends of elements in the periodic table
Causes atomic radii and ionic to decrease because electrons are being held tighter together by a stronger nucleus and as the number of electrons increase down the periodic table they fill more energy levels which increases atomic and ionic radii.
