CHAPTER 5: NONESSENTIAL AND ESSENTIAL CLAUSES Flashcards
What are the properties of a Nonessential Clause?
Usually start with “which,” can be removed from a sentence without changing its meaning, and should have two commas around them.
What are the properties of an Essential Clause?
Essential Clauses start with “that” rather than “which” and should not have commas around them.
What are “Implied that” Essential Clauses?
Clauses where you could put in the word “that” and they would sound the same – they should NOT have commas around them.
When a comma comes before a name or artwork…
It suggests that that is the ONLY one that exists. NO comma in front of a name or artwork suggests it is one of many.
If a person or title has been generally referred to earlier in the paragraph, then is later named specifically…
two commas go around it.
Avoid putting a comma between “Trick Noun as Adjectives” and the Name they describe.
They usually test this with people’s jobs (athlete, physicist, etc.)
