Chapter 5- Macromolecules Flashcards
What is a polymer?
Monomers linked together.
What is a monomer?
A single molecule
What are carbohydrates called and what elements do they contain?
Saccharides/sugar. Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen
There are two types of polysaccharides, what are they?
Energy and structural
What are the energy polysaccharides?
Starch, and glycogen
What are the structural polysaccharides?
Cellulose, and chitin
What are lipids?
Fats, phospholipids, waxes, and steroids.
What are the characteristics of fats.
Glycerol backbone
Are phospholipids hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Both.
What are the elements in proteins?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen
What bonds do the secondary structure have and what structures do they make?
Hydrogen bonds. Alpha helix and beta plated sheets.
Tertiary structure is made of what bonds?
Disulfide bridges, covalent bonds, ionic bonds, and hydrogen bonds.
How many structures are there in a protein?
4
How does a quaternary structure work?
Two or more tertiary structures are bonded.
