Chapter 2&3 Chemistry of Life Flashcards
What are the four main naturally occurring elements in the human body?
Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of matter that retains properties of an element
Water is a polar molecule because of the presence of?
Polar covalent bonds
What are the properties of Water?
Cohesion/Adhesion, High specific heat, Evaporative cooling, near Universal solvent, Expansion upon freezing, and Surface tension.
What do acids do to H+ concentration?
Increase
What do bases do to H+ concentration?
Decrease
What are buffers?
Substances that minimizes changes in the concentrations of H+ and OH- in a solution.
Give an example of a buffer.
Carbonic acid/ H2CO3
What is acid precipitation?
Precipitation with a lower pH than 5.2
How does pH move in relation to H+ concentration?
As pH declines, H+ concentrations increases.
What would the Hydrogen concentration be if the pH was 10?
10^-10
What times difference is there in the pH scale per number?
X10
What are the three parts of an atom?
Protons, neutron, and electrons.
An atom has an atomic number of 8, how many protons do it have?
8
What is the difference between neutrality and stability?
Neutrality is the charge of the Atom. Stability is when an atom is valence and does not requires more electrons.
