Chapter 5 - Integumentary System Flashcards
Parts of the Integument (aka, Cutaneous Membrane)
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis (not technically part of the skin)
Integumentary System Functions
- Protection
- Excretion and Secretion
- Thermoregulation
- Stores and Synthesizes
- Sensory Detection
Cells of the Epidermis
- Keratinocytes, 90%, produce keratin
- Melanocytes - 8%, color and UV absorption
- Langerhans/Dendritic cells - 2%, immunity
- Tactile/Merkel cells - 2%, touch
Epidermal Layers
Stratas:
- Corneum
- Lucidum
- Granulosum
- Spinosum
- Basale
Stratum Corneum
Water repellent layer, 2-30 layers of dead keratinized cells
- Anucleate cells
- Hornlike layer
Stratum Lucidum
Only present on thick skin (palms and soles), 3-5 layers of dead keratinocytes
- Lucidum = clear
- Glassy look
Stratum Granulosum
The keratinocytes stop dividing and start produces keratin
Stratum Spinosum
Spiny appearance, Immune cells to protect against
-Langerhans
Stratum Basale (germinativum or basale
Cells are undergoing mitosis 90%; contains keratinocytes
Sweat pH and composition
pH ranges from 4 - 6.8
99% water and 1% sodium chloride
Melanocytes
Gives our skin and hair color
Three accessory structures that are part of the integumentary system
- Hair
- Nail
- Exocrine Glands
Hypodermis
Layer below the skin - made of mostly adipose tissue. Provides storage of Vitamin A for the skin
Aka: Subcutaneous layer or Superficial Fascia
