chapter 5: immune system Flashcards
1
Q
T lymphocytes (T-cells)
A
- made in bone marrow and mature in the thymus gland
- part of cell-mediated immunity
2
Q
cytotoxic cells
A
T-cells that attach to antigens and destroy them
3
Q
helper cells
A
T-cells that aid B cells in recognizing antigens and stimulating antibodies
4
Q
natural killer cells
A
T-cells that target cells based on sugars on their surface
*mainly virus and cancer cells
5
Q
suppressor cells
A
T-cells that stop/slow the activity of T or B cells
6
Q
B lymphocytes (B-cells)
A
- transform into plasma cells and immunoglobulins
- part of humoral immunity
7
Q
Immunoglobulin G (IgG)
A
- main defence (75% of immunoglobulins)
- cross placenta to provide fetal immunity
