Chapter 5- Formulae Flashcards
What do you do when naming a compound of a metal and non- metal?
The metal keeps its name and the non-metal changes the last part of it name to ‘ide’
Name the following non-metals when they are in a compound:
Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen
Fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, oxide, sulphide, hydride, nitride
What is the ending of a compound of two non-metals, one of them being oxygen?
-ate
What is carbonate made up of?
Carbon and oxygen
What is sulfate made up of?
Sulphur and oxygen
What is nitrate made up of?
Nitrogen and oxygen
Hydroxide is an exception to the rule of ‘a compound with 2 non metals, one being oxygen ends in -ate’. What is hydroxide made of?
Oxygen and hydrogen
What is the formula for carbonate?
CO3
What is the formula for sulfate?
SO4
What is the formula for nitrate?

What does diatomic mean?
It is when an element goes around in pairs- but only as an element, not as a compound
What are the diatomic elements?
H2 O2 N2 F2 Cl2 Br2 I2
What is the formula and valency of copper
Cu and 2
What is the formula and valency of Zinc?
Zn and 2
What is the formula and valency of Iron (II)?
