16
Q

What are the 2 types of glaucoma?

A
  1. Chronic open-angle

2. Acute angle-closure

17
Q

How do you dx glaucoma?

A

tonometry

18
Q

How do you treat glaucoma?

A
  • meds for open angle closure

- surgery for acute angle-closure (laser iridotomy)

19
Q

What is macular degeneration?

A

(macula) are near the optic nerve degenerates

20
Q

Sx of macular degeneration?
etio?
tx?

A

loss of central vision

etio: age related, not alot of blood supplied to area
tx: no treatment, vit. A,D,E and zinc can slow it down

21
Q

What is diabetic retinopathy?

A

When you have microaneurysms, hemorrhages, dilation of veins, and new vessels form

it can be a major cause of blindness

22
Q

etio of diabetic retinopathy?

tx?

A

etio: scar tissue forms on retina/ high blood sugar
tx: surgery (photocoagulation or vitrectomy)

23
Q

What is retinal detachment?

A

Retina is elevated from the choroid

24
Q

sx of retinal detachment?
etio?
tx?

A

sx: floaters and light flashes, dark shadows
etio: begins w/ a tear in retina, fluid then leaks under retina–> separated from the choroid
tx: surgery w/o delay

25
Q

What is otitis?

A

inflammation of ear

26
Q

what is infective otitis externa?

A

pruritis, purulent or watery drainage

tx: eardrops

27
Q

what is otitis media?

A

inflammation of the middle ear, fluid behind TM

serous otitis media: clear fluid
suppurative otitis media: purulent fluid

28
Q

What is meniere disease?

A

chronic disease of inner ear

29
Q

Meniere disease

sx?
etio?
dx?
tx?

A

sx: vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, feeling of fullness
etio: unknown, destroy tiny hairs in cochlea
dx: symptoms, testing EcoG
tx: meds, decrease fluids, surgery

30
Q

What is Labyrinthitis?
sx:
etio:
tx symptoms:

A

inflammation of 3 fluid-filled chambers semicircular canals in inner ear
sx: extreme vertigo
etio: virus or bacterial infection
tx symptoms: bed rest, tranquilizers, antiemetics, antibiotics

31
Q

what is otosclerosis?

A

ankylosis of the stapes; ossicles cannot conduct sound vibrations

32
Q

what is ruptured TM?

A

ruptured eardrum

33
Q

What is cholesteatoma?

A

infected cyst-like mass of skin cells; leads to damage of ossicles –> hearing loss

34
Q

What is mastoiditis?

A

inflammation of mastoid bone or mastoid process

etio: streptococcal infection

35
Q

What is sensorineural deafness?

A

Occupational hearing loss; also caused from aging
