A

disease that results in polyuria and polydipsia

etio: decreased of vasopressin (ADH) antidiuretic hormone (released by posterior pituitary)
tx: vasopressin injections or nasal spray

What is Graves disease?

A

AKA hyperthyroidism.. goiter is present

sx: higher metabolism, tachycardia, palpitations, nervousness, insomnia
dx: t3 & T4 elevated
tx: antithyroid drugs, sometimes surgery or radioactive iodine therapy is required

What is cretinism?

A

hypothyroid in children

etio: lack of thyroid tissue or hormone
congenital: related to lack of iodine in food

Causes mental and growth retardation
tx: replacement of thyroxine (T4)

(common in women)
sx: decreased metabolism, dry skin, fatigue, hair loss, constipation

dx: excessive cortisol levels seen in 24 hour urine
tx: surgery or radiation to remove tumor or drug therapy to decrease ACTH (adenocorticotropin hormone)

sx: bronze color skin, inability to retain salt ad H20, wt loss, dehydration
etio: disease, tumor, infection
dx: adrenal calcification

A

decreased insulin production or faulty utilization of insulin

leads to hyperglycemia which causes body to metabolize fats which leads to ketone bodies in blood and urine

sx: polyuria, polyphagia, polydipsia, wt loss, fatigue
