Chapter 5 - EM Waves - Lenses Flashcards
What is another name for a concave lens?
Diverging lens
What does a diverging/concave lens look like?
Goes in at the sides
What does a diverging/concave lens do?
Spreads light out
What is another name for a convex lens?
Converging lens
What does a converging/convex lens look like?
Goes out at the sides
What does a converging/convex lens do?
Brings light together
What happens if the lens is ‘chunkier’?
It has a shorter focal length, and higher optical power
What is the focal point?
Where all the rays meet behind or in front of the lens (appear to have come from/ where they go to)
How would you draw a converging lens diagram?
~ draw ray from top of object through middle of lens
~ draw ray from top of object perpendicular across to lens - redirect through f (after lens)
~ where rays meet is where image forms (may have to extend behind)
How would you draw a diverging lens diagram?
~ draw ray from top of object through middle of lens
~ draw ray from top of object perpendicular across to lens - redirect through f (before lens)
~ where rays meet is where image forms (may have to extend behind)
What words would you describe whether the image is not real (behind lens), or real (in front of lens)?
Virtual or real
What words would you describe whether the image is bigger or smaller?
Magnified or diminished
What words would you describe whether the image is the right way up or upside down?
Upright or inverted
