Chapter 5 - EM Waves - Herschel And Ritter Flashcards
What did Herschel discover and when?
Infra-red rays in 1800
What did Ritter discover and when?
Ultra-violet rays in 1801
How did Herschel discover infra-red rays?
~ he was investigating the relation between heat and colour
~ he tested the control variable (which should have been room temperature), but the thermometer went beyond red - discovered infra-red
How did Ritter discover ultra-violet rays?
~ using silver chloride to detect energy in colours
~ turned black in darker colours (blue) and carried on changing after, meaning there was still energy - discovered ultra-violet
What was the independent variable of Herschel’s experiment?
Wavelength of light
What was the dependant variable of Herschel’s experiment?
The temperature
What was the control variable of Herschel’s experiment?
What the room temperature should have beeen
What was the independent variable of Ritter’s experiment?
Wavelength of light
What was the dependant variable of Ritter’s experiment?
Amount of silver chloride reacted
What was the control variable of Ritter’s experiment?
Temperature of room
What is a control variable?
An element that is not changed throughout an experiment
What is a dependent variable?
What you measure in the experiment/ what is affected during the experiment
What is a independent variable?
The variable that the experimenter changes
How could you increase the reliability of a test?
~ repeat AND find the mean/average
~ get a wider range of results
