Chapter 5 - Elements of Visual Image Interpretation Flashcards
Primary elements of image interpretation
Location, tone, color
Secondary elements of image interpretation
shape, size, texture
Tertiary elements of image interpretation
Pattern, shadow, depth, slope, height, volume, aspect
Higher level elements of image interpretation
Site, situation, association
Methods of search
use of collateral data, convergence of evidence, use of multi-concept
Spectral signature
a plot of reflectance of real-world surfaces. Provides insight as to why materials appear the way they do in photography (especially helpful for viewing objects in IR bands or outside our normal visual spectrum)
Tone
Shades of gray that are a function of the amount of light reflected in the specific band (wavelength interval) - allows for visual interpretation of spectral information
Shadow
Silhouette of an object may sometimes be the only clue of its identity
Shadows should be oriented towards analyst if present -> avoids pseudoscopic illusion
