Chapter 5. Electricity and magnetism Flashcards
What is an electric field?
The space surrounding a charged body is called an electrical field. A charged body entering an electrical field will be subject to electrostatic force.
When drawing electric field diagrams, the arrows around the negatively charged objects…
Move in and towards it
When drawing electric field diagrams, the arrows around the positively charged objects…
Move out and away from it
What does static electricity describe?
All phenomena related to electrical charges at rest and insulated charges.
What are the three ways to charge an object?
- Friction
- Conduction
- Induction
The only charges that can move between objects are…
negative
What does charging by friction mean?
When two neutral bodies are rubbed agaisnt each other, some atoms in one of the bodies may pull electrons away from the atoms of the other body, creating two objects with different charges
What determines the object that is able to receive the electrons?
The object’s tendency to capture or give up electrons
What does charging by conduction mean?
A conductor can be electrically charged by putting in it contact with another conductor that is already charged
What is charging by conduction result in?
Two objects will have the same type of charge but with magnitude less than that of the original charged object
