Chapter 3 -Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
the ability to do work
What is work?
force is applied to an object that moves
How is energy measured?
joules=> 1 joule=1 newton x 1 meter
What is elastic energy?
Examples?
energy stored in an object because it is compressed or stretched
Examples: spring, elastic hair band
What is electrical energy?
Examples?
energy resulting from ordered movements of electrons from one atom to another
Examples: power plants, generators
What is thermal energy?
Examples?
energy resulting from random motion of all particles in a substance
Examples: putting pot of water on the stove to boil
What is radiation energy?
Examples?
energy contained in and transported by electromagnetic waves
Examples: microwaves
What is chemical energy?
Examples?
Energy stored in molecular bonds
Examples: fossil fuels, candles
What is wind energy?
Examples?
Energy from movement of air
Examples: wind turbines
What is sound energy?
Examples?
Energy transported from sound waves
Examples: sound waves from singing, musical instruments
What is hydraulic energy?
Examples?
Energy from the flow of water
Examples: waterfall, river
What is nuclear energy?
Examples?
Energy stored in atomic nuclei
Examples: atomic nuclei
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy is never created or destroyed => it is transformed
What is energy transfer?
The transfer from one point to another (same type of energy)
What is energy transformation?
When one energy is converted into another type of energy
What is the formula for energy efficiency?
(amount of useful energy/energy consumed) x100= %e.e.
What is thermal energy?
total amount of energy contained in the substance that depends on the number of particles and their temp.
What is temperature?
measure of the speed (degree of agitation) of the particles in a substance. the faster the particles move, the higher the temp.
What is heat?
the transfer of thermal energy between 2 substances or environments. Heat always passes from warmer to cooler environments or substances
