Chapter 5 - Climate Flashcards
Mauna Loa (Hawaii)
measured atmospheric CO2 levels since 1958.
Atmospheric CO2 industrial revolution and now.
265ppm, 422ppm
CO2 last 800,000 years
180-300ppm
how is human interference affecting life history of animals. (fish)
- smaller average body size
- earlier age at first reproduction
effects on poaching elephants
evolving smaller/no tusks
Bycatch
Marine species caught in nets not intended for them. synthetic netting
1950s advancements in fishing
hydraulic power to haul big nets, track dolphins to purse seining around entire schools of tuna.
purse seining ban affects
dolphin mortality bycatch rate reduced 500,000 to 20,000
affects of loss of prey
fishing predators so there will be more prey
commercial extinction
once a species becomes too rare to find there is less incentive to hunt it, (this is not always the case)
Development of Industry
A) growth of towns factories etc. - more people = more demand
B) Hunters - increase harvest in order to sell
C) Cash generated from these sales = more money for better technology, guns, etc.
D) more technology - motors, roads
E) use of storage facilities allow for accumulation
F) transportation and sale to international market increase demand.
Shark products
shark meat, shark fins, shark cartilage
