Chapter 5 Chemical changes Flashcards
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is when a more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal from an aqueous salt solution.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the loss of electrons and the gain of oxygen
What is reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons and loss of oxygen
Why are displacement reactions also known as redox?
Because both reduction and oxidation reactions occur during displacement
What is meant by OIL RIG?
Oxidation
Is
Loss of electrons
Reduction
Is
Gain of electrons
Where are metals found? And (usually) in what form?
Metals are found in the Earth’s Crust. They are usually found in rocks, and bonded to other elements such as oxygen or sulfur.
What is a metal ore?
A metal ore is a rock that contains a commercially viable amount of metal.
What are the two methods of extraction?
Heating with Carbon
Electrolysis
Metal Oxide + Carbon —->
metal + carbon dioxide
metal + acid —->
a salt + hydrogen
acid + base —>
a salt + water
acid + alkali —->
a salt + water
acid + a carbonate —–>
a salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is an alkali?
A soluble base.
What is a base?
A substance that can neutralise acids.
