35
What is a cardiovascular technologist/technician?
A healthcare professional trained to perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including electrocardiography and more
36
What is embolus?
The obstruction of blood vessel by blood clot that has broken off from thrombus somewhere else in the body and traveled to the point of obstruction
37
What is ischemia?
Localized and temporary deficiency of blood supply due to obstruction to circulation
38
What is orthostatic hypotension?
A sudden drop in blood pressure a person experiences when standing straight up suddenly
39
What is regurgitation?
Backflow of blood through a valve
40
What is thrombus?
Blood clot forming within a blood vessel
41
What is angina pectoris?
A condition in which there is severe pain with sensation of constriction around the heart, caused by deficiency of oxygen to heart muscle
42
What is cardiac tamponade?
Pressure on heart as a result of fluid buildup around heart; heart becomes unable to pump blood effectively
43
What is congenital septal defect (CSD)?
A hole, present at birth, in septum between two heart chambers
44
What is arrhythmia?
Irregularity in heartbeat or action and comes in many different forms
45
What is premature atrial contraction (PAC)?
Arrhythmia in which atria contract earlier than they should
46
What is premature ventricular contraction (PVC)?
Arrhythmia in which ventricles contract earlier than they should
47
What is atheroma?
Deposit of fatty substance in wall of artery
48
What is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
Formation of blood clot in a vein deep in the body, most commonly the legs
49
What is peripheral vascular disease (PVD)?
Any abnormal condition affecting blood vessels outside heart
50
What are varicose veins?
Swollen and distended veins, usually in legs
51
What is a sphygmomanometer?
Instrument for measuring blood pressure
52
What is a cardiac biomarker?
Blood test to determine level of proteins specific to heart muscle in blood
53
What is a Doppler ultrasonography?
Measurement of sound-wave echoes as they bounce off tissues and organs to produce an image
54
What is cardiac catheterization (CC, cath)?
Passage of thin tube catheter through blood vessel leading to heart which is done to detect abnormalities
55
What is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)?
Procedure to restore cardiac output and oxygenated air to lungs for person in cardiac arrest
56
What is defibrillation?
Procedure that converts serious irregular heartbeats by giving electric shocks to the heart using an instrument called a defibrillator
57
What is extracorporeal circulation (ECC)?
During open heart surgery, routing of blood to heart-lung machine so it can be oxygenated and pumped to rest of body
58
What is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator?
A device implanted in the heart that delivers electrical shock to restore normal heart rhythm
59
What is sclerotherapy?
Medical treatment for varicose veins
60
What is thrombolytic therapy?
Process where drugs are injected into a blood vessel to dissolve clots and restore blood flow
61
What is arterial anastomosis?
Surgical joining together of two arteries
62
What is coronary artery bypass graft?
Open-heart surgery in which a blood vessel from another location in body is grafted to route blood around blocked coronary artery
63
What is intracoronary artery stent?
Placement of stent within coronary artery to treat coronary ischemia due to atherosclerosis
64
What is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty?
Method for treating localized coronary artery narrowing
