Chapter 5: Biological Macromolecules Flashcards
What do monomers make up?
Polymers
What happens in a dehydration reaction?
2 molecules covalently bond to one another and a water molecule is lost
What happens in hydrolysis?
A bond between monomers are broken by the addition of a water molecule
What are carbohydrates?
Sugars and polymers of sugar (monosaccharides)
What are the trademarks of sugar?
A carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group
What are the four main classes of large biological molecules?
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Nucleic Acids
What are lipids?
Fats, phospholipids and steroids
-These are hydrophobic
What is an ester linkage?
Comes from a dehydration reaction between a hydroxyl group and a carbonyl group
What are phospholipids?
The basic components of cellular membranes
They have a modified phosphate group bonded to the third carbon on the glycerol
What charge do acids have?
Negative
What charge do basics have?
Positive
