Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is thermal energy
The energy of moving or vibrating particles
What is the law of conservation of energy
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from ice form of energy to another.
What is a thermal equilibrium
When the objectsand surroundings will have the same temperature
What is insulation
Anything that can reduce the loss of heat from an object and the gain of heat from surroundings.
What is temperature
A measure of the kinetic energy its particles. Hotter substances have particles that are moving or vibrating faster. As the temperature drops, particles lose kinetic energy.
What 3 ways can heat be transferred
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
What is conduction
A method of heat transfer in which heat is passed by vibration of particles in or between solid, liquid and gas substances.
What is convection
The transfer of heat ina liquid or a gas due to less dense, water particles rising and denser cooler particles falling
What is radiation
Radiation is the movement of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves, which travel from water substances to cooler substances.
