What is the endocrine system
A communication system that controls many parts of the internal environment of the body.
What are hormones
Hormones are inserted directly into the bloodstream and travel around the body transferring messages through blood.
What are target cells
The cells in the body that have receptors that match the hormone like a lock and key
What are Testes
It uses testosterone, it develops and controls male sexual characteristics and controls production of sperm.
What are ovaries
Uses oestrogen, helps with puberty and aspects of pregnancy and feral development. Also uses progesterone, this thickens the wall of the uterus.
What is bacteria
Bacteria are very small cells that are able to reproduce themselves.
What are viruses
Viruses are unable to reproduce by themselves. Instead they invade our cells and use organelles to make copies of themselves. This stops our cells from functioning properly which is why we can die from viruses.
What is homeostasis
The process of regulating the internal conditions of the body
What is negative feedback
A response that reduces the intensity of the original stimulus
What are the main organ systems that help to maintain an animals homeostasis
Nervous and endocrine system
What are ectotherms
Animals with a body temperature that changes as the outside temperature changes.
What are endotherm
Animals with a body temperature that is maintained within a constant range.
