Chapter 5 Flashcards

1
Q

Moving vehicle stability

A

Most stable when weight is evenly distributed. Engine pull without increase road speed and in straight line

Low type pressure affects stability creates resistance and increases fuel consumption.

The patch of the tyre in contact with the road on average is about the size of a hand.

Q

Factors affecting vehicle balance and grip

A

Accelerating - weight shifts back

Steady speed - weight is evenly distributed

Braking - weight shifts forward

Cornering - weight shifts to the outside of the curve

Cornering and braking - weight shifts to the outside of the curve and to the front.

Cornering and accelerating - weight shifts to the outside of the curve and to the back

Q

Acceleration/Deceleration

Acceleration sense

A

Weight shifts back - Front tyres lose grip
/
weight shifts forward - Front tyres gain grip

Acceleration sesne - ability to vary speed to respond to changing conditions

Accelerate round bend to maintain speed and keep max grip and even weight

Harsh accelerate waste fuel and less grip for steering

Q

Gears

A

Make all gear changes smoothly

Don’t change gear while cornering, vehicle unstable.

Economical-change gear early

Rapid progress-max accelerate then change gear

Low gear when going uphill, low speed or hazards. High revs means rapid accelerate and climb slopes.

Greater turning power of low gears so lower grip

High gear when cruising. Low revs means high speed but less ability to accelerate or climb slopes.

For emergency response and pursuit goal is to make rapid progress safely.

Q

Brakes

A

Engine braking for gradual speed variation.

Braking should be progressive and increase steadily

Safe stop distance when can stop in clear area of your side of road

Narrow single track needs double stop distance

Overall stop distance= thinking distance + braking distance

Think distance depends on alertness and anticipation

2 SECOND RULE

Abs helps steering while braking only works with full maintained brake pressure

Q

Steering

A

Hold wheel lightly but tighten for max control

Quarter to 3 best hand position

Big turns-push pull

Rotational steering cross over hands.
